Taste of Wonders

On March 9, I was heading to yet another cute small town called Sonora. On the way there, I stopped by Jackson to get something. Since I was already there, I decided to check out the Serbian bakery and Mother Lode Deli and Catering that I’ve missed during my last visit. I was in luck because both of these places were opened.

The Serbian bakery called The Blue Door Bakery was located on the east corner of Main Street near the Wells Fargo Bank. Perhaps the name The Blue Door Bakery was because of its literal blue door. Because I got there late in the morning, most of their baked goods were already gone. I did see that they offered turkey sandwiches and a couple of pastry varieties. When I asked the man behind the counter about the morning bun, he said that it is like a cinnamon roll with some glaze. I also asked briefly about the turkey sandwiches, and he said, “They are really good!” I decided to take a chance, and got both the turkey sandwich and the morning bun.

The morning bun shaped like a cinnamon roll, but the bread texture was more like a croissant with multiple flakey layers faintly coated with cinnamon powder. The glaze was sticky, but it was also sweet and tasty with a hint of citrus and honey. I actually did not eat this until the next morning, but I warmed it up in the microwave for about 30 seconds, and it was warm, soft, and delicious. I imagine it would pair well with a nice cup of warm tea.

The turkey sandwich was a nice surprise. I am not a big fan of turkey meat because they are usually dry and just do not really have much taste to them. When I took a bite of this turkey sandwich, I was a little shocked how good it tasted, and in a clean and healthy way, too. As you can see in the picture, there is a generous layer of turkey meat, cheese, cucumbers, lettuce, house spread, and sandwich between two slices of Cibatta bread. The bottom bread layer seemed thick, so naturally, we think it will be dry and hard to chew. However, I only recall the sandwich being moist, crunchy because of the cucumbers, and the spread was a little creamy and maybe a little sweet? I tried to savor the taste as much as I could, but I couldn’t help myself so I devoured the sandwich.

Another sandwich that I got from this trip was a Panini (panino if you’re Italian) from Mother Lode Deli and Catering. They had make your own Panini options. Mine was with basil aioli, provolone cheese, tomato, prosciutto, salami, and what might have been French bread. All of their aioli sauces sounded extremely savory and tasty, so I definitely need to try other ones next time. As for this sandwich, it was hot and packed with flavors mostly from the meats, tomato and aioli sauce. Perhaps because the sandwich was pressed down that the meat layers were overwhelming. Everything was well balanced and flavorful. A hot yummy sandwich made the very cold trip worthwhile.

I thought all three items were delightful surprises, and I truly cannot wait to be back to try again.
