Cosumnes River Preserve

Cosumnes River Preserve “consists of over 50,000 acres of wildlife habitat and agricultural lands owned by seven land-owning Partners.” It is located about 20 miles south of Sacramento, California. There are two trails: Wetlands Walk and River Walk.

I first learnt about this nature preserve many years ago when one of my photography professors took the class here for a field trip.  I recently came back to visit in September 2022 because I wanted to go on a nature walk, but I also did not want to drive too far.  It is mostly flat, and has a couple of bridges with plants on either side of the bridges, so it makes a nice background setting for some portrait photography. I also think that during certain time of the year, this place would be a hot spot for photography students and enthusiasts.

Outside of the visitor center was a whiteboard where people can write down what they have observed during their visit. I thought that was a great idea especially for little kids to recall their observations and curiosities. During this visit, I also found some wild blackberries, grapes, and flowers.

While reviewing my pictures for this post, I had realized that although my visit was in a single day in September, it seemed as if I was there for three seasons of the year. Part of the preserve was green and lush with a nice size pond for the ducks and birds to bathe and play in. There were wildflowers, which we usually associate it with the spring season. Also part of the preserve was dried and the leaves were brown and crisp due to the hot summer. Then there were parts where the leaves started to change to the autumn colors.
